Describes the type of engine (2 or 4 stroke) the general layout of the cylinders (in-line 4, V-twin, parallel twin or single cylinder) and the type of cooling system (air or liquid).
Engine type
Liquid-cooled, 4-stroke In-Line Four
The combined volume of each cylinder measured in cubic centimetres.
Displacement
998 cm3
Bore is the internal diameter of the cylinder. Stroke is the distance the piston travels from the bottom to the top of the cylinder. Both are measured in millimetres
Bore x stroke
76.0 x 55.0 mm
The ratio between minimum and maximum volume of the cylinder between the cylinder head and the top of the piston.
Compression ratio
12.7:1
Describes the operation of the valves (DOHC, SOHC, OHV and intake reed valve) and the number of valves per cylinder.
Valve/Induction system
DOHC, 16 valves
Describes the maximum power the engine produces without any forced air system.
Maximum power
128.4 kW {175 PS}/ 11,700 rpm
Describes the maximum power the engine will produce with air being forced into the air box, effectively pressurising the system.
Maximum power with RAM Air
135.3 kW {184 PS}/ 11,700 rpm
The amount of driving force the engine produces.
Maximum torque
115 N·m {11.7 kgf·m}/ 9,500 rpm
Describes how the fuel/air mixture is fed into the cylinder.
Fuel supply/Carburettor
Fuel injection: Ø 43 mm x 4 (Mikuni)
Describes the type of system used to produce the high voltage required to make the spark plug operate.
Ignition
Digital
Describes how the product is started.
Starting
Electric
The type of transmission and the number of gears.
Transmission
6-speed, return
Describes the frame construction and material.
Frame type
Backbone/Twin-tube, aluminium
Rake is the angle the steering is inclined from the vertical. Trail is the distance between an imaginary line drawn vertically through the wheel axle and an imaginary line drawn through the steering head. The distance between these two lines when they meet the floor is the trail. (perhaps it would be easier to use a diagram).
Rake/Trail
24°/102 mm
Describes the type of suspension.
Suspension, front
43 mm inverted cartridge fork with adjustable preload, 16-way
rebound/compression damping and top-out springs
Describes the type of suspension.
Suspension, rear
Bottom-Link Uni-Trak with gas-charged shock, adjustable preload,
stepless rebound/compression damping and top-out spring
Describes the amount of travel on the front suspension from uncompressed to fully compressed.
Wheel travel, front
120mm
Describes the amount of travel on the rear suspension from uncompressed to fully compressed.
Wheel travel, rear
125mm
Describes the size of the front tyre.
Tyre, front
120/70ZR17M/C
Describes the size of the rear tyre.
Tyre, rear
190/50ZR17M/C
Describes the number and size of discs, type of calipers and number of pistons in the calipers. Or the number and size of drums. Dependant on product line.
Brakes, front
Dual semi-floating 300 mm petal discs with radial-mount
opposed 4-piston, 4-pad callipers
Describes the number and size of discs, type of calipers and number of pistons in the calipers. Or the number and size of drums. Dependant on product line.
Brakes, rear
220 mm petal disc with single-piston calliper
Gives the dimensions of the vehicle at the longest, widest and highest points.
Dimensions (L x W x H)
2,045 mm x 705 mm x 1,115 mm
The distance in mm between the front and rear axles.
Wheelbase
1,385 mm
The distance from the floor to the highest part of the seat.
Seat height
825mm
Fuel capacity
17 litres
The weight of the product without fuel, oil and coolant.
Dry weight
170 kg
Automatic Headlights On (AHO) is an initiative introduced by the European Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers (ACEM) in 2003 in order to increase the conspicuity of motorcycles. All 2004 MY Kawasaki have AHO fitted and this system operates in the following way. The headlamps automatically switch on after the ignition has been switched on and the starter button has been released.
